NOAA's Office of Education, Educational Partnership Program (EPP) is pleased to announce that on May 16, 2008, Graduate Sciences Program (GSP) student Larry A. Alade completed his Doctoral Degree in Marine Estuarine and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dr. Alade is a full-time employee for NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. His dissertation, entitled "A simulation-based approach for evaluating the performance of a yellowtail flounder movement-mortality model," investigated the performance of a mark-recapture model used to determine the spatial dynamics of the three yellowtail flounder stock in the Northeastern United States.
In his new position as a Fishery Biologist in NMFS, Dr. Alade works under the Cooperative Research team to help in the ongoing development of the mark-recapture database system for a variety of species that will enhance its utility for analytical purposes. In addition, he has been tasked to assist the Southern Demersal team in conducting and the developing scientific assessments for the yellowtail flounder stocks. Recently, he was among a team of scientists that participated at the 19 groundfish assessment review meeting (GARM III) that took place in Woods Hole this past August.
